Great chart that really emphasizes the importance of teaching students to be good digital citizens. Open the playground, but model, teach, and give students feedback first on how to be safe there.

Nancy White's insight:

Whether you are teaching in traditional face-to-face classrooms, blended, or fully online, these are key ingredients for motivated, self-directed learners.

When designing learning for digital citizenship, we need to think beyond just delivery of "content" - but how can you help students own it?  Use these ingredients in your learning design!

Louise Lewis's curator insight, July 26, 2013 4:25 PM

Teachers to partner the learning process rather than direct it.

This past week, I worked with a small group of educators on becoming a "Networked Educator", and we had some great conversations about how social media is changing a lot of what we do in schools..."

Nancy White's insight:

Of course, I immediately checked to see who was following our district twitter account and was thrilled to see that in my spot check, the students who were following all had appropriate tweets displaying! I realize, however, that for every one of them, there are probably plenty more who really need some guidance in the area of social media.  Great post!

Gallery of Heroes~ Integrating Digital Citizenship into the Curriculum

This prezi celebrates the student work that emerged from an 8th grade ELA unit integrated with digital citizenship.
Nancy White's insight:

This is nicely integrated with CCSS ELA standards! Students were able to make a connection between heroes from history, the qualities that these heroes have in common, and how they can apply those same qualities personally - then transferred this understanding to appropriate behavior in the social media world. Very well designed!

Nancy White's insight:
This makes me think about the importance of helping our young learners gradually learn appropriate behaviors, safety, and how to socialize in a safe space from an early age.  We need to be there with them in online spaces, just like we are on the playgrounds.  Thanks for sharing, Adnan!
Melissa Bradley's curator insight, January 30, 9:02 PM
Wow, this is eye opening. It makes me think twice about where I want my students to conduct research. Moving forward, I will have vetted a few sites for them to conduct research to ensure valuable content for them to view and read. For example, when researching to predict weather patterns students will use weather.com.

How To Tackle Digital Citizenship During The First 5 Days Of School - Edudemic | Teaching Digital Citizenship | Scoop.it
Digital citizenship is not a one time discussion. It is an ongoing process that needs to be taught to all grade levels and to all stakeholders.
Nancy White's insight:

Excellent!  Must read/must do for every teacher. I love the simplicity and open discussion/ownership this inspires.

Mary Reilley Clark's curator insight, August 22, 2013 9:36 AM

My contention has been that banning digital devices in school ignores the powerful computer many students carry every day.  They need to learn the academic uses for that phone they use to text and Instagram!
