Labels Matter The labels that we use matter. At FETC, I was reminded of this when a group of us were treated to a backstage tour of the Polynesian Resort and dinner at the Kona Café.

One of the simplest changes you can make on your journey toward personal learning is the label you use. Change "student" to "learner." Then believe it.

The reauthorized Elementary and Secondary Education Act, signed into law last week by the president, includes important education technology provisions. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) represents a significant devolution of power from the federal government to states and school districts while espousing a broader concept of what constitutes academic achievement. But will the removal of unwanted or unsuccessful tactics mandated by the U.S. Department of Education mean better solutions will replace them? Under the ESSA, educational technology could spark a transformation of teaching and learning for the now empowered states and districts.
Nancy White's insight:
"Currently, a large gap remains between the relatively modest impact that technology has had on education, particularly in grades K-12, and the transformative impact that technology has had on other parts of our lives." As I reflect on this statement, I believe one reason is that we have been layering technology on top of 20th century pedagogy, rather than using its power to personalize learning. I believe that ESSA will help move education institutions closer to using technology in transormative ways to assure every student succeeds.

Universal Design of Learning (UDL) is a theory developed in the 1990s that stipulates that teaching for all can be optimized by studying how humans learn and using that information to design universal learning plans.

How can we tell when the lovely idea of personal learning has been co-opted and twisted into something much different?

Such important points, distinguishing between personalized learning (as in something educators or technology does) and personal learning, which is not something that can/should be delivered or covered, but describes learning that the learner chooses.
