Engaged Learning in MOOCs: a study using the UK Engagement Survey

Fiona Harvey's insight:

I have great respect for Julie Wintrup and Kelly Wakefield with their work on student engagement (see RAISE network) - this report in collaboration with the HEA provides some valuable research for engagement but it would be interesting to see how this develops.  It mentions assessment as a form of engagement - but our moocs are not assessed. Perhaps this means that we may be assessing in the future.

Why MOOCs are still worth it - The Oracle | MOOCs | Scoop.it
In spite of the poor reputation massive open online courses (MOOCs) have gained due to their low completion rates, these courses remain a valuable option for students and non-students alike.
Fiona Harvey's insight:
The low completion rates argument was very old (in MOOC time) I think most of us in education know that it's not a measure of success. The article mentions how courses are accessed in a valuable way

This model may be perfect for those outside the UK but for a UK system there would be QAA implications.  That may not be a barrier though and may improve overall student experience.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

South Bank University are running a mooc alongside their existing programme.  I hope that they are using it with their students on campus - so in a more direct and productive way, rather than as a text book.  If they are they are following in the footsteps of some of the Coursera Moocs.  I'd be interested in what their on campus students got out of it more than if it was an online course.

Also, if it is running with their on campus students as well as learners on the mooc, how have they managed the QA processes (which is an important consideration and distinguishes us from other countries in terms of reputation)

2013 - Grade Change: Tracking Online Education in the United States - OLC

2013 - Grade Change: Tracking Online Education in the United States - OLC | MOOCs | Scoop.it
The eleventh annual report on the state of online learning in U.S. higher education is designed, administered and analyzed by the Babson Survey Research Group, with data collection conducted in partnership with the College Board. Using responses from more than 2,800 colleges and universities, this study is aimed at answering fundamental questions about the nature and extent of online education.
The 2013 survey reveals the number of higher education students taking at least one online course has now surpassed 7.1 million. The 6.1 percent growth rate, although the lowest for a decade, still represents over 400,000 additional students taking at least one online course.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Lots of data here from an established and respected survey which provides an insight into how HE leaders in the US consider online learning. Section here on MOOCs particularly interesting featuring how their role is considered and what function they play.  Would be useful to compare these results to EU data.

SAY WHAT? MOOCs should be available to all, including learners who are hard of hearing.
Fiona Harvey's insight:
Saw this in several places and I was surprised as we don't know who's taking the MOOC that they wouldn't have done this. If we use the MOOC as a standard for all courses in terms of quality, then this is a reminder to all curriculum designers for all students (especially those from a distance)
